Vancouver Fly Fishing for Trout & Steelhead

Welcome to our BC Sport Fishing blog! I'm Brian Mack, a long time fishing enthusiast in BC and owner/head fishing guide of Silversides Fishing Adventures. Fly fishing around Vancouver and southwest British Columbia has provided me with countless hours of enjoyment and memorable experiences. I am particularly fond of fly fishing for Trout on our local rivers. Excellent populations of Bull trout plus Rainbow & Cutthroat trout keep luring me back to several rivers around Vancouver. But it is not only the existence of Trout locally but it is especially the inspiring scenery and magical landscapes of BC. Even just 1 hour from the big city and one can feel they may have travelled for days to one of the more remote river valleys on our coast. This is what makes fly fishing around Vancouver so addictive. The cure? More casting, mending and tight lines.

Springtime Fly Fishing produces!

My 2 favourite months for fly fishing are March & April. 2 species of fish make this possible. Steelhead and Bull trout. Steelhead need no introduction, they have earned their reputation. Chrome, fast, powerful, heart pounding. That says it all. Catch a Steelhead fly fishing and you can brag. It's something to be proud of, something you'll never forget. If you've never fly fished don't expect to catch one however. Longer casts and a skilled presentation are critical for success. I highly recommend fly casting lessons at the very least. Fly fishers that possess a intermediate and up skill level will do just fine.

Bull trout are easier to hook up with and will keep you entertained while waiting for the grand prize. Bull trout around Vancouver are mostly anadromous and thus they can grow rather large. In the spring they have a voracious appetite for Salmon fry as they head downstream towards the ocean. All our flies will resemble either salmon fry or smolts. I have encountered Bull trout over 10 lbs on several occasions. On average though most are in the 18-22 inch range which is pretty good. On certain days when river conditions are ideal we have caught and released over 50 Bull trout and that's with 2 rods. This won't happen everytime but it's a sign that numbers are great and you'll probably hook a few even if you're a beginner fly fisher.

With all these fish and mystical scenery it's just killing me to sit here and write this. I'm going to have to pack up and hit the river tomorrow!
